True Friendship

What is a true friend?

In society today, people have superficial ideas about friendship. You can’t let a friend walk all over you. If you have a friend, who is disturbing your peace and causing you distress, you have a duty to distance yourself.

But it is so difficult, especially when you are so attached to that person.

A true friend only lifts you up, never tears you down, always forgives, and loves you for who you are, even in the bleakest moments.

Simone Weil asserts that a friend is someone who is as necessary as food. And while that is so, one must stand on his or her own two feet. You can’t depend upon your friend for everything. You have to be self-sufficient.

In order to love, you need to get outside of yourself. Metaphorically speaking, walk in that person’s shoes.
